How the Government Fined the Mobile Industry

There used to be a time when networks used to be nice and help you out when you were in trouble such as when your phone got stolen or your sim was barred, you simply used to ring a free phone number and got to talk to a customer service advisor who would then rectify the problem.
But over the last few years things seemed to have changed much more. Mobile phone providers basically sacked a vast amount of staff and switched their customer service numbers to premium rate.
The vast amount of networks have deployed this simply because of a £22 billion tax charge that was handed out by the government in 2000. The tax itself was actually made so that the companies could pay back the national debt, but that simply does not seem to be happening. As you are no doubt aware we are in the middle of a huge economic downturn, which has been caused by the country spending money like its water.
On the other hand it can not all be blamed on the government solely, as the network providers themselves are also too blame, most of the providers have increased their call costs a ridiculous amount. If you are also have your phone on a contract basis, then you will come to realise that most firms have become so overwhelmed that they are overcharging people.
This is once again a problem that simply cannot be solved with ease as the person who has the contract then has to call the premium rate number, which then makes the person hold the line for hours, as there is no staff. And then because of that the following month they get a much higher bill.
